8th March, Mumbai: Holi the festival of colours is celebrated with a pure intention to fill our lives with colours of joys and happiness.
But the Bollywood has made some Holi special songs which literally brings physical abuse, harrasment, and sexiest words and phrases which literally intensifies the meaning and makes it vulgar but we have made it our party anthem and therefore it has become quite normal for us to use it and celebrate the vulgarness in our day to day life.
If we look into our Hindi cinema that has given some beautiful yet offensive songs, let’s look at some of these songs .
There’s a movie of Sahrukh Khan named Darr which has a Holi song whose starting line opens with “Jo jee mein aaye tum aaj kar lo, chaho jise inn baahon mein bhar lo”
These lines clearly signifies a flagrant torture but we pretend it to be a normal song with the common lyrics and celebrate the song in every Holi . We never find these songs questionable.
Another song from the movie sholay is “aang se aang lgana sajan re, hame aise aang lgana”.is also a perfect example of how in the name of song vulgarness is presented to the society.
In the name of Holi as it’s tagline suggests “Bura na mano Holi hai” people tend to listen, make songs or do anything in the name of Holi .
In some songs we can easily see how people force women to play Holi or put the colour forcefully on them which is absolutely wrong,as we can observe the lyrics of Ramesh Sippy’s Sholay has another famous Holi song ‘Holi Ke Din Dil Khil Jaate Hain’ and this song literally portrays an alone woman who is chased by a group of men who want to forcefully attack her with colours and also wants to touch her in the name of festival . Another movie where Hema Malini is playing the role of basanti and sings the song “Holi ke bahane tu, chhed na mujhe besaram” . This song and the role of basanti where she allows veeru to pour some water on her and later also argued that why is he not allowed to her however he wants. These songs literally shows how ambiguous the songs and the movies are where the men powerfully wants to harass women as they have the right with them.
Other songs which flows in line are “Do me a favor let’s play Holi” in this song the other line “don’t touch me” by the female but still the actor doesn’t asks for consent and dance in each other’s arms are a perfect example of men ruling over women . The other one comes from Kati patang in which the lyrics says “aaj na chorenge” literally examplifies how the patriarchal society is still prevalent where the women are perceived as objects and can be touched or used whenever and wherever required.
