20th March, Mumbai: The movie Shazam! Fury of the Gods has been released and has received positive reviews from viewers. It has a group of moviegoers that were eager to see what the sequel would bring because it wasn’t as touted as other DC Extended Universe films.
However, the eagerly awaited sequel had the weakest domestic debut on Thursday of any DC Extended Universe movie to date. With a pitiful $3.4 million, Shazam! Fury of the Gods almost missed Margot Robbie’s Birds of Prey, which earned $4.0 million.
Yet the filmmaker foresaw it coming, so keep reading to find out what the director has to say about the movie’s dismal box office performance!
Director David F. Sandberg expressed his response to the Zachary Levi-starring film’s box office performance in a statement.
The director responded on Reddit to a discussion thread regarding the film’s lacklustre reception. He acknowledged, “It’s not like this is a surprise,” jokingly, David continued, “was paid all [his] money upfront.”
“Not to worry. It’s not as if this is a surprise. I anticipated the outcome of this long ago. Well, I’ll be OK.” Sandberg commented, “I got paid all my money upfront [smiley emoji]”
The Shazam director tweeted that he was aware of how the box office tracking was set up in addition to his Reddit comment. The statement continued, “The ‘Shazam’ movie’s director has also been following you on Twitter for a long time… Not at all what I meant. I meant that I was aware of how the box office tracking appeared. The [smiley emoji] was my clever response to the pay comment.”
Despite being a member of the DC Universe, the film just isn’t doing as well as it could be in attracting crowds and building buzz. Gal Gadot’s special presence did not make her Wonder Woman character more legitimate. Things seem dire as of yet for this DCU movie.
