Bhumi Pednekar’s performance in Badhaai Do (2022) earned her third Filmfare Award. She won the Best Actress (Critics) award for her performance as Suman, a lesbian physical education teacher who marries a gay police officer named Shardul (Rajkummar Rao). From their families, both are keeping their actual selves hidden. The same-sex marriage issue, which is now being discussed by the Indian Supreme Court, was supported by the actor. She declared herself to be a community ally and claimed we shouldn’t have any prejudices about other people’s lives.
Bhumi has already won the Best Actress (Critics) award for her performance in the 2019 film Sonchiriya. In addition, she was honoured with the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut in 2016 for Dum Laga Ke Haisha, the movie she co-starred in with Ayushmann Khurrana. After Badhaai Do won the Oscar, Bhumi also shared on Instagram that the film’s crew supported their LGBT friends and hoped that the movie would help make the world a more just and equitable place for everyone.
Bhumi said, “I just feel love is love and as individuals we should all have equality in every aspect of life,” in an interview with ETimes following her Filmfare award. “I believe that since God knitted us together, it is not our place to judge the worth of other people’s lives or harbour prejudices. I support the local community.”
Moreover, she remarked, “Winning the Filmfare is more of a personal triumph, but the affection the movie received overall is a triumph for the neighbourhood.”
“You realise that our nation is changing as a result of the film’s popularity and admiration because, like in so many of my other works, it is reflected in our cinema. Since I have so many friends who are LGBTQIA+, Badhaai Do is a really significant movie to me since it touches a deep part of my spirit. I had the opportunity to represent them in some tiny way, and that gives me the impression that I’m helping to address some of their problems.”
Bhumi was featured in the flicks Bheed and Afwaah earlier this year. She also has three films with Arjun Kapoor that will be released this year: Bhakshak, The Lady Killer, and Meri Patni Ka Remake.
